MAY MAYBERRY

THE PHOTOGRAPHS ON THESE PAGES ARE FOR REFERENCE ONLY - whilst every care is taken to make accurate representations of the paintings, it is impossible to display an exact replica of the colours in the originals. All monitors are calibrated differently and even with the superb quality of modern digital photography, they cannot reproduce the millions of colours visible to the human eye. THE ORIGINAL IS ALWAYS MORE VIBRANT AND COLOURFUL THAN THE PHOTOS DISPLAYED ON THE WEBSITE.

Giclée Prints are now available for all paintings and photographs - details below.

Some editions will be limited to a maximum of 250 prints and each LE print will be accompanied by a numbered, signed certificate of authenticity. Details for ordering these special editions can be found on my PRINTS page.

The Auld Kirk, Alloway, Ayr

Auld Kirk, AyrPrizewinning painting of the Auld Kirk in Ayr, Scotland where some of Robert Burns' family, including his father, are buried.

This is the "haunted" graveyard featured in Burn's world reknowned poem "Tam o' Shanter. A Tale" where Tam, riding home from the local Inn on his horse, Meg, comes across a coven of witches and Auld Nick (the devil) himself, whilst taking a shortcut through the graveyard. He is chased by the witches and narrowly escapes capture by galloping across the the bridge, now known as "Tam's Brig". Everyone knows that witches cannot cross running water, but Meg loses her tail as one of the witches makes a grab for it as they bolt for the bridge. A great story from one of the world's greatest poets!

Moonlight in Tall House
		Town
Moonlit Harbour in Tall House Town

I enjoyed painting the pair of tall houses so much that I decided to paint a larger picture with a whole street of tall houses at the harbourside. More snow-topped hills and shimmering light from the full moon.... I think this will be the last of my tall house pictures... although, I've been told never to say never....

Red Arran Sunset

Red Arran Sunset

A stunning sunset over the Isle of Arran, just off the west coast of Ayrshire. This is a view of Arran taken from the beach at the mouth of the River Irvine. This picture is all about the yellow sun, the red sky and the play of red light on the island mountains and the sea.

As usual, this picture does not do justice to the vivid reds and the play of light in the original - if you would like to see more photos of this painting, please contact me.

Cottage in Snowy
		SunsetCottage in Snowy Sunset

Not all snow scenes are cold. This is a warm sunset in an imaginary secluded woods. I think there is a lake just past the bushes in the distance where the old man who lives in this cosy cottage goes on a fine sunny day to catch fish for his supper.

Big Ardrossan RockBig Ardrossan Rock

In the background is the Isle of Arran, North Ayrshire, as seen from the northern side of Ardrossan beach at low tide. The rock stands around 10 feet high and the water line is clearly visible around the top. This is one of my favourite places to take photographs of the sunset - the colours can be phenomenal!

Crannog on Loch Tay Crannog on Loch Tay

In the North of Scotland, these crannogs stand out against the landscape as a reminder of how our ancestors used to live. The mist on the mountains helps to create a romantic vision of the past - I expect the reality was rather more stark.

These crannogs are currently being investigated by the BBC - a link to their web page is here. Channel 4 also have some interesting information on their website and they have a couple of photographs which closely resembles the view in this painting. It is surprising how many people in Scotland, let alone the rest of the UK, are quite unaware of their existance.

Tam's Brig, Alloway, Ayr Tam's Brig, Alloway, Ayr

This painting is another in my series of Rabbie Burns' "Tam O' Shanter" pictures. This is the bridge that Tam, on the back of his horse, Bess, fled over. As he reached the bridge, one of the witches managed to grab hold of Bess' tail and pulled it straight off! Everyone knows that witches can't cross water, so, although Bess was now tailless, both she and Tam were safe from the witches and devil - for now...

Stormy Clouds over Dundonald Stormy Clouds over Dundonald, Ayrshire

This is mainly a cloud study. This sky is typical of what we see regularly here in Ayrshire. The field is just around the corner from my house - I am so lucky to have such space outside my own front door!

In the distance you can see the hills of Dundonald, where the famous castle still overlooks the village. Many famous historic figures have spent time at Dundonald Castle, including William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, to name only a couple - but that is another topic for another day...

Weel Kent Face - Portrait

A Weel Kent Face

This was an exercise for a portraits workshop I attended at Irvine Harbour Arts Centre. I have no details for the model, but if you recognise yourself, please contact me and I can give you a name! This is only my third attempt at portraiture and I am quite pleased with the result. Maybe I should open a Portraits page on the website :o) ...
